Sigetronics Co., Ltd., a leading company specializing in advanced semiconductor devices, has been officially selected as a “2025 2nd-Term Partner Company” of the Jeonbuk Defense Venture Center, recognizing its outstanding proprietary technology.
The company held the partnership signing ceremony on October 14 (Tue) at the Jeonbuk Technopark, and aims to leverage this collaboration to enter the fast-growing K-Defense and global military semiconductor markets, laying the foundation for Korea’s first defense-specialized semiconductor foundry.
By establishing a foundry dedicated to this highly specialized field — one that is virtually non-existent worldwide — Sigetronics seeks to resolve the technological stability issues faced by small and medium-sized enterprises and to secure a stable domestic supply chain.
This initiative is expected to rapidly enhance global competitiveness and serve as a driving force in leading the international military semiconductor market.
In defense applications requiring exceptional reliability and precision, Sigetronics plans to advance the localization and sophistication of weapon systems based on five key semiconductor device technologies, as follows:
| No. | Advanced Device Technology | Key Defense Applications |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | SCBI (Semiconductor Bridge Igniter) | Low-energy, high-speed ignition device used in missiles, rockets, guided munitions, and detonators (e.g., mines). Designed with integrated ESD protection and a miniaturized structure for maximum reliability. |
| 2 | High-Sensitivity APD (Avalanche Photo Diode) | Optical sensor used in LiDAR, tracking, and guidance systems for missiles, drones, robots, and vehicles. Enables high-speed operation and precise distance/velocity detection. |
| 3 | High-Voltage MCT (MOS Controlled Thyristor) | High-power switching device applied in missiles, anti-tank weapons, and vehicles. Withstands voltages >1.4 kV and handles large current pulses, improving power control performance. |
| 4 | Infrared Emitter and Detector Devices | Core components in night-vision scopes and targeting systems. Based on GaAs compound semiconductor technology, providing high photoelectric efficiency for enhanced surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. |
| 5 | GaN Power & RF Devices / MMIC Amplifiers | Used in electronic warfare, AESA radar, 5G/6G, and satellite communications. Offers high power density and efficiency, enabling miniaturization and high-output performance in military communications and radar systems. |
As a selected partner company, Sigetronics will receive comprehensive five-year support from the Defense Technology Promotion Institute, including:
- Identification and R&D support for defense commercialization projects,
- Government and local funding assistance,
- Customized technical guidance from specialized engineers.
A Sigetronics representative stated,
“This partnership marks an important milestone in our vision to become Korea’s only defense semiconductor foundry.
Leveraging our core device technologies, we aim to localize the supply chain for military semiconductors — currently reliant on foreign sources — and position ourselves as a leading company driving the growth of the regional defense industry.”
