Compound semiconductor specialist Sigetronics (KOSDAQ: 429270) announced on the 22nd that it will begin full-scale commercialization of power and RF (radio frequency) devices based on GaAs (Gallium Arsenide) and GaN (Gallium Nitride).
The company has thus far expanded its ESD protection device and sensor businesses through its in-house M-FAB production line, and now aims to establish domestic self-sufficiency and localization in compound semiconductor technology through this business expansion.
Compound semiconductors — including InP (Indium Phosphide), GaAs (Gallium Arsenide), GaN (Gallium Nitride), SiC (Silicon Carbide), and Ga₂O₃ (Gallium Oxide) — are utilized in optoelectronic, power, and RF devices. These materials enable applications across sensors, optical communications, wireless communications, power control, and radar, offering superior performance such as high-temperature operation, high-voltage endurance, high-frequency performance, and photoelectric functionality — capabilities that are unattainable with traditional silicon semiconductors.
With the rapid advancement of next-generation industries such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI), autonomous driving, robotics, and aerospace, the global demand for compound semiconductors has been surging exponentially. Recognizing their strategic importance, many countries have classified compound semiconductors as core strategic and national security technologies, accelerating export control measures and technological self-reliance efforts. This trend is driven by the unique ability of compound semiconductors to realize system-level performance beyond the limits of silicon — including light emission and detection, high-temperature stability, high-voltage tolerance, and high-frequency operation.
A company official stated,
“Leveraging our accumulated device expertise and experience in M-FAB operations, we aim to create a successful model for the localization of compound semiconductors in Korea,” adding that
“Through phased investments and internalized technology development, Sigetronics will strengthen its global competitiveness and emerge as a key player in the Korean compound semiconductor ecosystem.”
