Sigetronics announced on June 10 that it has completed the development and performance verification of a prototype 20W-class X-Band power amplifier (GaN PA MMIC), a key component used in K-defense weapon systems.

The newly developed product is a critical semiconductor device for the transmitter modules of AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar systems installed in advanced fighter aircraft and naval vessels. As a key component that determines radar detection range and accuracy, demand for GaN-on-SiC semiconductors with superior high-power capability and thermal performance has been rapidly increasing in the global defense market.

According to the company, the device delivers 20W-class output power while achieving a gain of more than 37 dB and a maximum power-added efficiency of 39.2%. By realizing high output and efficiency within a compact chip size, the product is expected to contribute to the miniaturization and performance enhancement of radar systems.

The technology was developed by combining Sigetronics' RF design and process expertise with technology transferred from the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). The related research results have been submitted to IEEE for peer review, and the company expects this achievement to further demonstrate its global technological competitiveness.

The product can be applied not only to AESA radar systems but also to a wide range of advanced defense applications, including anti-drone defense systems, electronic warfare equipment, and airborne and naval surveillance radars. Sigetronics plans to expand its RF semiconductor portfolio by developing next-generation products with higher output performance, as well as products targeting Ku-Band and Ka-Band applications.

Building on this achievement, Sigetronics aims to expand its business beyond its existing electronic protection devices and sensor businesses into the field of specialized defense semiconductors. The company also intends to accelerate efforts toward strengthening domestic self-reliance in defense semiconductors and expanding into the global market.

A representative from Sigetronics stated, "This X-Band GaN MMIC represents our first achievement in the defense sector, integrating the company's GaN process technology and RF design capabilities. We will continue to expand our portfolio of high-power RF semiconductor products while actively pursuing mass production capabilities and entry into the global defense market."
