SIGETRONICS, Inc. announced the launch of its BB-PD (Broadband Photodiode), a silicon photodetector that operates across a wide spectral range and is designed for use as a key component in various environmental sensors, such as fine dust detection, as well as in non-invasive monitoring of heart rate and blood flow.

Currently, most domestic sensor module manufacturers rely on imports from global companies such as Osram (Germany), Hamamatsu (Japan), and Optotech (Taiwan). With the rapid growth of the wearable device market, combined with the COVID-19 pandemic, wearable devices such as smartwatches have become central to the digital healthcare industry. These devices are evolving beyond simple blood flow monitoring to include oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and eventually even non-invasive blood glucose monitoring, enabling continuous health tracking for users.

The BB-PD developed and commercialized by SIGETRONICS is designed to operate across a broadband range of 400–1000 nm. Compared to competing products, it demonstrates approximately 10% higher photo-responsivity. Its sensor architecture allows it to precisely detect multi-wavelength optical signals (green, red, and IR) simultaneously. In addition, the BB-PD achieves very low capacitance values (around 20 pF), providing superior signal-to-noise performance and stable operation in high-speed switching circuits.

Until now, advanced BB-PD products have been available only from a handful of global suppliers, leading to high costs and long lead times, which created significant supply challenges for domestic module and set manufacturers. The BB-PD mass-produced by SIGETRONICS is evaluated as the first product of its kind in Korea, leveraging the company’s in-house 6-inch silicon “M-FAB” (Multi-Purpose FAB), where both front-end and back-end wafer processes are carried out. This enables excellent competitiveness in terms of cost and lead time.

Furthermore, the design, structure, and specifications of the BB-PD can be customized to meet diverse customer requirements, offering flexibility and convenience to end-users. Looking forward, the BB-PD is expected to contribute to advancements in high-speed, high-sensitivity sensing, as well as ultra-thin, miniaturized, and lightweight designs in applications such as healthcare wearables, environmental sensors, LiDAR, and VCSEL optical modules.
